The English Department

Mission and Vision Statement

The staff of the English department of Mont La Salle (EDMLS) School is committed to providing a comprehensive programme to prepare students to become proficient in English in order to promote openness to other cultures, to achieve academic excellence and to prepare them for life long learning.

Objectives:
To support the mission and give concrete ways in which to fulfil the vision, (EDMLS) has drawn up the following objectives:

1-Enabling students to communicate effectively in different situations and settings with native and non-native speakers.

2- Enabling students to communicate effectively in subject matter areas in general.

3- Equipping students with the requisite linguistic skills for pursuing university education in their fields of specialization.

4- Developing students’ critical thinking skills (analytical, synthetic, critical).

5- Developing intercultural understanding and appreciation.

6- Enhancing students’ abilities to work with others.

7- Enhancing students’ self-confidence and independence.

Methodology:

To make every lesson effective, teachers of EDMLS try to include a variety of teaching and learning methodologies in every lesson in order to reach the above-mentioned objectives. These methods comprise the following:

1. Brainstorming: It is particularly appropriate at the beginning of a lesson to tap the background knowledge students may or may not have about the topic.

      a) Students generate as many ideas as possible- the more the better.
      b) There is no evaluation of any single idea. There is no criticism about whether an idea is good or bad
      c) Students are free to build upon the ideas of others.

2. Audio-visual presentation: teachers rely on the use of power point slides, photographs, illustrations, recording…etc to explain their lessons. On the other hand, starting the seventh grade, students present their research in power point.

3. Synthesis: Students pull together various bits of information to form a new whole or basic understanding of a topic. This process underscores the need for students to actually do something with the information they receive.

4. Problem-solving activities: in this situation, students are given a problem and are directed to find an appropriate solution.

5. Small group discussions: discussions are a useful strategy for stimulating thought as well as providing students with opportunities to defend their positions.

6. Graphic organizers: A graphic organizer is a pictorial representation of the relationships that exist between ideas. It shows how ideas are connected and how ideas are related to each other. It is the basis for all forms of comprehension.

7. Role playing: Students take on the role of a specific individual and acts out the actions of that person as though they were actually that person.

8. Projects: Students choose a theme from the themes that we tackle in their lessons and they do research about it in groups. They present it written ( a binder) and orally (power point).
